MP urges Governor Peter Munya to quit referendum push

Imenti, Kenya: Imenti South MP Kathuri Murungi has said all Jubilee-allied governors should respect the coalition’s position on both the Pesa Mashinani and Okoa Kenya referendums.

Speaking to The Standard, Mr Murungi asked Meru Governor Peter Munya and MPs from Meru to support the Government’s position that Kenya does not need a referendum at this point in time.

"Governor Munya and ourselves belong to the Jubilee government. The President has requested the coalition governors to stop the referendum push and give dialogue a chance because this is the best way to agree on what allocations need to be added to the devolved units," the MP said.

Murungi said only talks between the governors and the Government would yield any meaningful results because more money can be made available to counties through Parliament without a referendum.

"Governor Munya should drop his hard stance on this matter. Their push for a referendum is just playing into CORD's 2017 agenda," he said.
