Chebet defends 6km title in schools cross country

Double East Africa Junior cross country champion Ruth Chebet successfully defended her title after she won the girls 6 km cross country during the Brookside national Secondary Schools First Term Games at Shimo La Tewa High, yesterday.

Chebet, a student at Riruta Central Secondary, Nairobi and running for Metropolitan region, however was pushed to the tape before narrowly retaining the title she won last year.

She timed 19 mins 18.4 seconds for the crown and her focus is to win gold in World Junior Championships in USA in June.

“I used the cross country to prepare for the World Junior Championships and am happy to have retained the title,” said Chebet who specialises in 3,000 and 5,000m.

Gloria Kite of Nakuru region came behind her with a time of  19:19.96.  Valentine Mateiko of Nzoia regioncame third after clocking 19:20.4 seconds with Daisy Jepkemei of Nakuru region was fourth with a time of 19.33.1 seconds.

Others were Eva Cherono (Nakuru) 19:33.8, Victoria Mwikali (Metropolitan) 19:54.6, Chemtai Angeline (Nzoia) 19:55.5, Stella Ruto (Nakuru) 20:02.9, Winfred Mutile (Metropolitan) 20:14.2, Rosemary Mumo (Metropolitan) 10:18.5.

Over at the boys category, East Africa cross country silver medalist Andrew Lorot of Metropolitan region won the 8km race in a time of 22:48.5 seconds.

Devis Kiplangat of Nakuru region came second (22:54.8) while Festus Kiprutto of Nakuru region followed timing 23:04.5.

Others were Chumo Rodgers (Nzoia) 23:09.0, Edwin Kosgei (Nakuru) 23:09.5, Dominic Omare (Lake) 23:12.1, Kipserem Peter (Nzoia) 23:13.0, James Ndhiwa (Metropolitan) 23:14.4, Titus Mogusu (Lake) 23:21.5, Evans Ruto (Metropolitan) 23:22.8.

In boys overall ranking, Nakuru region bagged 28 points for the title with Metropolitan and Nzoia regions amassing 31 and 40 points for second and third position followed by Lake (45 points), Northern (108 points), Aberdare (109 points) Mombasa (149 points) and Garissa (0 points).

In girls, Nakuru retained the title with 19 points while Metropolitan came second with 26 points. Others were Nzoia (38), Aberdare (79), Lake (99), Northern (113), Mombasa (133) and Garissa (0 point).

For decathlon, Cleophus Kipruto from Nzoia region did well in 100m, 110m hurdles, 400m and 1,500m. He also sparkled in long jump, short put, discus, high jump, pole vault and javelin.
