Eastleigh couple arrested, two hand grenades recovered

Nairobi, Kenya: A couple was early Wednesday morning arrested and two hand grenades recovered from them during a police operation in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

The two were at home when police who had been tipped off raided their house. Police say the man aged about 60 has been supplying the explosives to youths for attacks in the city and Mombasa.

The raid was conducted at around 1 am and the grenades were recovered in the sitting room stashed in a box.

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue said recovery was made as they arrested more than 400 people in the area in the ongoing operations.

"We are interrogating them to see if they can help us with more information," said Kibue.

No arrest has been made so far in connection with the terror attacks on food kiosks on Monday night that killed six people and injured more than 30 others.

Some 657 suspects were Monday night and Tuesday arrested in Eastleigh, Nairobi following the Monday night terror attacks that left six people dead and more than 30 wounded.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku said a security operation has been launched in Eastleigh and will continue until the perpetrators of the attack are brought to book.

“The operation will continue until all criminal suspects and perpetrators of this terror are brought to book,” said Lenku without revealing if any of those in custody was involved in the attack.

He added that six people died while 31 were injured in the three attacks that happened on Monday night. Ten of the injured remain in hospital with multiple injuries.

Those who died were trapped in one of the food kiosks as they were watching the evening news at about 7 pm when a man stood at the entrance and hurled two explosives and shut it before escaping.

The other victims were on the roadsides walking and waiting to board vehicles when they were hit by the explosives.

Lenku asked residents to cooperate with security personnel and volunteer information that will assist in arresting the culprits.

“This act of cowardice perpetrated against innocent and peace loving Kenyans who were going about their normal activities is barbaric and immediate action has been taken by our security agencies,” he stated on Tuesday.

Police have since said the explosives were caused by Improvised Explosive Devises.
