Leaders blocking Moyale killings probe, says lobby

KENYA: A civil society organisation has accused politicians from Marsabit and Mandera counties of blocking investigations into the deadly violence that has rocked the region.

The Centre for Human Rights and Public Utilities claimed that senior politicians in the region are using their positions to intimidate CID officers. They, however, did not offer names, saying they would do so when they hand their report to Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo Monday.

“This means the common mwananchi will continue to be killed while the politicians, who have directly or indirectly caused the violence, remain protected,” said human rights activist Abdullahi Galgalo.

He added, “The Inspector General of Police should stop being intimidated by these politicians, who hide behind the Executive arm of the government.”

The activists called on Kimaiyo to provide a full list of names of people who have been interrogated up to now on the clashes in Mandera and Moyale, and also explain measures he has taken to contain the violence.

Human rights activist Rahma Wako said hundreds of women and children have fled to Ethiopia as refugees.

She added that the government has failed to end the conflict between warring clans in Marsabit County, largely due to corruption.
