NAIROBI, KENYA: A senior police officer was Sunday arrested and disarmed after he scared and chased his traffic department colleagues from an accident scene while armed with a gun along Outering Road, Nairobi.

The inspector of police had been involved in an accident with another motorist before his colleagues from traffic responded.

The two officers said when they arrived at the scene, the inspector, who was not in uniform, drew out his gun and chased them while shooting to the air.

Witnesses said a team of officers from Buruburu police station responded and managed to disarm the officer.

Nairobi County police commander Benson Kibui said they will take disciplinary action on the officer.

Meanwhile, long serving director of police operations Njue Njagi has retired. He quit office on Friday at a brief ceremony after serving for 41 years in the service.

Njagi rose from the rank of the constable to the one he retired in of Deputy Commissioner of Police. He was in charge of Nairobi as the Provincial Police Officer at the height of 2007/2008 post poll violence.

As the director of police operations, he was one of the most powerful officers in service after that of Inspector General and his deputies.

He oversaw all police operations in the country and controlled the biggest budget. Njagi’s deputy Henry Barmao will be in charge in acting capacity.

And all former Provincial Police Officers are stuck in their former stations for lack of their new proposed offices.

It was expected the PPOs would report to a new office in Nairobi where they will be referred as regional commanders but most of them said they were yet to get ordered to enable them move out.

“We actually do not have offices to operate from for now because the new County Commanders have taken over and since then we are stranded,” said one of the PPOs.

The police bosses and Provincial Commissioners were recalled to Nairobi as part devolution.

The move is part of a directive that was given by President Uhuru Kenyatta who ordered that all provincial commanders be redeployed.
