Coast MPs push for firm action on MRC

Coast MPs have condemned the killing of four people, including the bodyguard of Fisheries Minister Amason Kingi in Mtwapa, and asked the Government to deal with members of the Mombasa Republican Council.

The MPs said it was the Government’s prerogative to protect all Kenyans regardless of status, saying the murder sent a bad signal.

The MPs led by Wundanyi MP Thomas Mwadeghu said Kenyans had a right to voice out their policies as they seek various political seats in the General Election.

Mwadeghu noted that the minister was attacked while addressing an official meeting and called for investigation.

“If a senior Government official can be attacked while in a meeting then we wonder what would happen to wananchi going to such forums,” he said.  While condoling with the families of the victims, Galole MP Dhado Godhana said the attacks set a bad precedent.

Mr Godhana said the Coast has had several skirmishes and it was time the Government investigated the matter. “We know what has been happening and we have been telling the Government to investigate this matter as lives are being lost every day,” he added.

The leaders were addressing the Press on the sidelines of the two-day ODM retreat at the Great Rift Valley lodge in Naivasha.

Yesterday, the Government warned the Mombasa Republican Council were planning to disrupt national examinations.

Internal Security Minister Katoo ole Metito said they have intelligence that MRC plans to disrupt the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education as part of their efforts to “remain relevant”.

Metito said the group has been warning parents in the region against participating in the electoral process including registering as voters in the coming exercise.
