Striking KNH doctors suspended

The ministry of medical services has suspended all striking government registrars and interns at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The hospital has been feeling the pinch of the absence of trainee doctors who were officially called registrars. They are general doctors who are training to specialise in various fields of medicine.

Kenyatta National Hospital has about 400 registrars who offer a wide range of services.

As a result of the move a total of 393 registars who were practicing at the referral hospital have lost their jobs.

Medical services minister Anyang’ Nyong’o has said that their rights to train and practice at  KNH has been withdrawn immediately.

Speaking at the ministry headquarters on Tuesday, the minister maintained that the government cannot pay self sponsored students practicing at referral hospitals.

“The privately sponsored students should be paying us for using our services, but they insist we have to pay them allowance. This is not possible and may require a bill tabled in parliament,” he said.
