This is the high cost of quitting. At the beginning of a marathon race, there is a large crowd, but over time, it gradually thins out to just a few people who reach the finish line. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; and struck down, but not crushed" (2nd Corinthians 4:8-9).
