Could Raila's detention history lead to sympathy votes?

Raila touched the hearts of many Kenyans after he talked about how he was detained in prison for a long time. Linus Kaikai, who was one of the moderators during the presidential debate, asked Raila to respond to perceptions that his family and President Kenyatta's family have held Kenyan politics hostage by dominating the country for over 50 years.

Raila responded saying that the misconceptions were misleading. He also explained how both Jaramogi Oginga and Jomo Kenyatta earned the positions of Vice president and president respectively since they both fought for the freedom of Kenya.

He went ahead to say that he was involved in the second liberation not by invitation from his father but out of conviction. He also told Kenyans of how he was in political detention for a long time that he suffered eye problems and that is why he cannot stand too much light. He said that poor lighting in detention for a long time damaged his eyes.

This shows how much Raila suffered and many Kenyans are feeling sorry for him. I saw a post today of a lady who says that Raila changed her mind on whom to vote for because of that story. She said that she even cried when Raila was narrating how he suffered during his political detention.

Will Kenyans give Raila sympathy votes because of the detention story?
