Man who drove into State House at high speed explains what he wanted to tell Uhuru

Man who drove into State House at high speed on Friday, June 19, in an attempt to speak to President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been charged with creating a disturbance.

Appearing before Milimani law courts senior principal magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot on Tuesday, June 23, Luqman Ali Mahmmoud said he "Wanted to speak to President Uhuru Kenyatta on how to worship Allah."

A state prosecutor said Mahmmoud drove past the State House's manning gate despite attempts by three security officers to stop him.

The presidential guards were then forced to open fire at Mahmmoud's Volkswagen Polo's tyres to make him stop.

After Mahmmoud admitted to the two charges, creating a disturbance and entering a restricted area, Magistrate Cheruiyot asked for a mental evaluation of the accused before proceeding to trial.

The prosecutor informed the magistrate that the suspect would be taken to Mathare hospital on Thursday, June 25, and a report filed on Friday when Mahmmoud would appear in court.

The magistrate further directed the suspect to be remanded until he is presented in court on Friday.

On June 11, last year, a 25-year-old student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology was shot after he trespassed into State House.

"The student who climbed over one of the State House gates was shot and wounded in the left shoulder by GSU guards manning the gate after he drew a knife when he was challenged to stop," said State House spokesperson Kanze Dena in a statement.

Appearing before Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, the student pleaded for the court's and President Uhuru's mercy.

"I have no problem. I have suffered for being held in a police cell and being cuffed to a bed. I am in pain. I pray to this court to forgive me and I will not repeat the offence... I pray that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kenyans forgive me," he Brian.
