Kenyans on Saturday, December 21, 2019, took to social media to express varied opinions on the move by Uganda’s Makerere University to establish The William Ruto Leadership Institute.
This came after it emerged that Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni had cleared the way for the creation of the institute at the learning institution.
A letter seen by Ureport, addressed to the University’s Senate confirmed that it was in accordance with the wishes of Uganda’s President that the institute is erected at the University.
The institute will be set up to, among other goals, develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning about Africa.
Through the hashtag #MakerereCorruptionInstitute Kenyans online did not hold back their views on the move by the university with some in support and others with the latter opinion.

Makerere University was founded in 1922 and stands out as the oldest university in the East African region.
Before leaving for Uganda, Ruto through his communication team said he was happy to be associated with the institute whose aim was to empower the people of Africa and to improve democracy in the continent.
“I relate wholly with the idea of this Leadership Institute which to me is: the struggle for African progress through ideas and knowledge, the ambition to write the best version possible of the future of our people and to democratise leadership and exceptionalism for all Africans regardless of wealth or privilege,” he told Standard Digital before leaving for the event.
