Chelsea boss Frank Lampard set to move for Wilfried Zaha in January transfer window

Frank Lampard is set to move for Wilfried Zaha next month to beef up Chelsea’s attack - despite reaching the Champions League knockout stages.

Tammy Abraham and Cesar Azpilicueta scored the first-half goals that saw off French club Lille.

But with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Maurizio Sarri’s Juventus among their last-16 opponents, Lampard revealed he will target more firepower.

He said: “As you get to the cut-throat stages of this competition you can’t afford to be missing some of the chances we missed in the group stages.

“With Eden Hazard leaving we lost a lot of goals and creation in his position. I think we can probably strengthen and get more competition in those areas.

“It did get twitchy, and that’s on us. If we’re going to have as much domination and control, and attempts on goal, we need to have a better chance conversion.”

Versatile Zaha made clear during the summer he is desperate to leave Crystal Palace for a big club.

Chelsea also have an interest in Dortmund’s England star Jadon Sancho but the German club is unlikely to allow him to leave in January.

Abraham is the first English player to score 13 competitive goals for Chelsea in a single season since Lampard’s 17 during the 2012/13 campaign. But he is the only Blues player in the top 20 scorers in the Premier League.

“We need to take more of our chances, whether that be in the Premier League or the Champions League. I don’t think it’s killer instinct. I don’t think people are ever trying to miss or take the wrong options. we’re just not at the moment converting enough."

Asked whether moving for bigger names could affect the progress of his rising academy stars, Lampard said: “No. I don’t think it is a concern at all.

"They are here to stay, I truly believe in that. I believe in the quality of all the young players here. I want them all to get better and they will improve for sure because of the age of them and where they are in their development.

“But as you move forward and improve the squad it will be done with a view to getting better and if anything that sort of challenge for the young players should be one that they stand up to for this squad to keep moving in the right direction.”

Lampard also insisted he’d have no fears meeting one of European football’s heavyweights after finishing second in Group H.

He added: “I don’t mind the idea of having a bigger team. That’s the Champions League and if you win you may have to take on big teams.

“The young team we have got here, what a challenge. At the minute I’m just delighted we got through a tough group. We should just be happy we’re through and whoever we play next we have to give it our lot.
