Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder has confessed that he lost his virginity when he was just 13 years old after learning about sex from his older brother.

The hunky actor, who played vampire Damon Salvatore in the hit show, has opened up about his first sexual experience.

The 40-year-old, who is married to actress Nikki Reed, told Sirius XM’s Radio Andy, that he lost his virginity to an older woman, who was 16 at the time.

He said: "It was fun. When you’re 13 and you’re a boy … boys are pretty on it."

Ian, who also starred in Lost, said he learned everything he needed to know about the ladies from his older brother, who is seven years his senior.

He said: "He taught me a lot, and he was quite a Casanova.

"He used to have girls in his bedroom all the time and what I did was, I went into the bottom corner of his window and I pinched the Venetian blinds. I pinched the blinds down so I’d have a clear view.”

"When he had girls over — by the way, Louisiana gets cold in the wintertime, it’s freezing — I would go outside, put on all my stuff and my mum thought I was going out to play with the dog.”

"I grabbed my hot chocolate, put on all my clothes, my mittens and stuff, and would watch and I learned a lot."

Ian, who shares two-year-old daughter Bodhi with his wife, says raising a young child is "scary" because of the double standards between boys and girls.

He added: "It's so vastly unfair. All my friends who are guys who have sons are like, 'Yeah, you’re going to get a date, yeah', while all the dads with daughters are like, 'I will kill these little b******s'. It’s so vastly unfair."
