Half of employed Kenyans earn less than Sh30,000 a month

Despite the rising standards of living, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is set to announce that half of the people employed earn less than Sh30,000.

Statistics to be released in the course of this week indicate that the number of formally employed Kenyans who earn less than Sh30,000 rose by 154,945 people or 14 percent to 1,279,982.

This number equals to 46.3 percent of the total number of formally employed Kenyans which adds up to 2,765,159.

This means that of the total number, only 1,485,177 or 53.7 percent of formally employed people earn more than Sh30,000.

The report further indicates that workers in the private sector are the most affected as 69 percent earn below Sh30,000 a month.

This reveals that workers in government facilities earn more than their counterparts in the private sector.

It further shows that 183,061 of the 394,975 workers employed formally in the past four years have been salaried below Sh30,000.

According to a KNBS report, the average monthly expenditure per adult to survive in Kenya is Sh7,811.
