Student refuses to sit for KCSE, says she is not prepared

A student at Ngata Girls’ High School in Nakuru County on Tuesday refused to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations saying she was not adequately prepared.

The student is said to have blamed her unpreparedness on parenting as she got a baby just a few months ago and it consumed most of her time.

Rongai Deputy Commissioner Julius Kavita wrote a letter to the area’s Director of Education explaining why the girl refused to the exam and refuted claims that the school’s principal had denied the candidate a chance to sit for the exam.

Elsewhere, a candidate in Nyamira refused to take examinations in hospital after giving birth on day one of the National tests.

The girl aged 19 wrote to the Kenya National Examinations Council, declining to continue with the exams.

According to Nyamira County Commissioner Amos Mariba who is overseeing the exams in the region, the candidate went on labour on November 3 and was admitted to Bosiango Health Centre where she delivered successfully.

"She did not sit for any paper and she has already written to KNEC saying she doesn't need to sit her KCSE," Mariba said.

The Commissioner said the girl had been regularly absent from school since February after registering for the exams and that she only reappeared during the tests.
