Residents of Nyakach and Ugunja sub-counties in Kisumu and Siaya respectively are set to benefit from national government’s Sh12.5 million water projects.

Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary Joseph Irungu commissioned three water projects which will benefit schools and local communities.

The projects, funded by Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, include a borehole at St Elizabeth Massuun Ulaga School expected to cost of Sh2.4 million and another one at Raduodi Primary School which will cost Sh5 million. Both schools are in Ugunja.

Elizabeth Ulaga School Water Supply targets to benefit over 2,500 persons through water kiosks and individual connections.

A borehole at Pedo Primary School in Nyakach, costing Sh4 million, was also launched over the weekend.

The PS expressed confidence that the three projects will go a long way in tackling acute water shortages in the areas.

All the three projects are solar-powered to cut on electricity expenses.

He said the ministry had also approved funding to the tune of Sh20 million to finance implementation of various projects within Siaya County to improve access to portable water to schools through rainwater harvesting/storage and boreholes.
