Woman charged with stealing Sh108k using metal bar

A woman suspected to be the mastermind of armed robberies and kidnappings in Nyeri has been charged in court.

Elizabeth Waithira was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo and denied five counts relating to robbery with violence and abduction.

The court heard that on diverse dates in April and May this year, she stole Sh108,000 and a mobile phone from Reuben Gikonyo Kiongo along the Othaya-Nyeri road while armed with a metal bar with others not before court.

She also robbed Andrew Muchemi of Sh90,000 and a mobile phone worth Sh5,000. She was further accused of abducting both men.

According to the charge sheet, Waithira also robbed Esther Wanjiru of Sh22,000 at Furaha shop in Nyeri town while armed with a pistol and a knife before abducting her to an unknown place with the intent of demanding ransom.

Waithira denied the charges.

State counsel Victorine Kitoto told court that two of her accomplices are held at Eldoret and Nanyuki prisons after being arrested in connection with separate criminal activities. The two are set to be escorted to Nyeri to be charged with robbery with violence.

The court ordered that she be produced in court on July 29 when her accomplices will also be charged and the cases be consolidated.
