I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 22

A few years after clearing high school, Khasoha Shiyenze noticed that something was not right with her reproductive health.

She would experience heavy menses, excruciating abdominal pain and bloating on some occasions.

After undergoing a number of tests, the 22-year-old was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Around the same time, her mum was diagnosed with brain cancer.

“The doctors must be wrong. This is a misdiagnosis. Where will we get the funds?” she thought.

After a period of denial, she started treatment and months later she went back to hospital to check whether the tumours had cleared.

Much to her relief, her radiologist informed her that they were no longer present and she was more than happy with the results having been given a clean bill of health.

While speaking to Ureport on Thursday, Shiyenze revealed that she recently went back to hospital and doctors had some devastating news. The tumours are back.

She is currently doing both radiotherapy and dialysis at a number of city hospitals.

Also, she advised young ladies against over-relying on contraceptives unless prescribed by a doctor.

“Don't take contraceptive pills without advice…I was given by some doctor when I was in form 1 so that I live a normal life.

“I was given contraceptives to help me regulate my periods and hormones…look at where we are now. I used them from the age of 13. I’m reaping the side effects now,” she said.

Shiyenze is a talented designer and is seeking to raise funds through Shiyenze Fashion, a company that specialises in African outfits.

Proceeds from purchases will be channelled towards settling her medical bills.
