Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was on Tuesday criticized for claiming that Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal’s Sh100million cash bail was unreasonable.
After the courts slapped the governor with the figure, Babu took to social media and termed the ruling ‘prejudicial’.
“Kenyans are shocked to learn of the unprecedented bail and bond terms set by the courts today (Tuesday) on Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal. The presiding judge set bond at KES150 million and bail at KES100 million, figures previously unheard of in the corridors of justice.
“Such a ruling is definitely prejudicial and presumes guilt of the accused even before trial proceedings have even begun.

“The Constitution of our Republic states that a person is considered innocent until proven guilty. While we unreservedly support H. E Uhuru Kenyatta’s fight against corruption, we must guard against those who would subvert this fight with sensationalism and unwarranted show business,” said the lawmaker.
He further argued that such a ruling would spell doom for petty crime offenders in case they are slapped with similar terms.
Netizens were quick to respond and below we have sampled some of the reactions:
Willie Njenga: This bail should have been 5 billion. We need the 21 billion by all means. If someone can be jailed for giving a bribe of 2k as it is norm, no mercy should be shown to the corrupt.
Ephantus Njeru: Why was the guy who tried to bribe with 2k jailed for 8yrs and you never commented?
Vicky Victor: My fren now it should be like this once u are mentioned in any corruption case you are guilty until proven innocent.
Richard Mailu Mbithi: Babu on this one you are wrong. Hiyo bail ni sawa na amount he is accused of stealing. For too long these mega corruption cases have been having an easy time at the courts.
Yusuf Sanga: My friend, on this you are wrong. People must stop stealing public resources. This should be a lesson to other leaders in line.
Evans Barasa: On behalf of the common mwananchi out here allow me to differ with you on this brother.... I fully support the verdict and the judge who gave this should be commended for a good job. This is going to serve as a lesson to many other public servants out there who have intentions of squandering our tax, ...... Unless you got such interests Babu.
