Depression: Of family tiffs and blue devils

Rifts between spouses have been cited as likely causes of depression.

Phillip Moriasi, a brick maker at his rural Gekano home in Nyamira County, had been living with his girlfriend and paying fees for her at a college in Kisii town.

Then sometime last September, they had a fight.

Area chief Yobesh Mose told The Standard Moriasi had spent a lot of money he had earned in the business to take care of his girlfriend.

“Moriasi is said to have become wild after visiting the house he had rented for his girlfriend who he differed with earlier only to find that she had moved out with all the household goods he had bought her. He committed suicide,” said Mr Mose.

Text message

Then there is the case of Thomas Ongori, a resident of Birongo, who died last October while being treated at Keumbu sub-county hospital. He had been taken there after taking poison following a quarrel with his wife.

Mogusu Ongori told The Standard he got a text message from his brother Thomas informing him that he was tired of staying with his wife. On visiting his brother’s house, Mogusu found him groaning in pain and took him to hospital. He died there.

In Keumbu, a man who had been working in a butchery was found hanging from the roof of his house, with a rope around his neck.

Area chief Benson Ogwoka told The Standard Thomas Nyamwange alias Silicone was living alone after differing with his wife earlier.

Walking stick

In the same area, Benson Onsembe, a water vendor, was found dead in a borehole in his home by his wife who had gone to sell milk at a nearby market earlier in the morning.

Mr Ogwoka said Onsembe’s wife returned home and found his walking stick near the borehole and on peeping in, saw his body floating. It appeared he committed suicide.

Meanwhile, a medical officer working for the Homa Bay County Government and her first born child are fighting for their lives at a private hospital in Kisii after she attempted to drown herself and her two children aged four and one in a borehole at her Mosocho home last weekend.

The medic aged 35 is said to have been in an abusive relationship and had told friends several times that she was tired of the violence from her husband.

She had reported the matter to the police.
