A year-old boy who fell down an 18m-well and was trapped for almost 48 hours has been rescued alive.

The boy, who has not been named, had gone to gather fruit with his mum and siblings when he fell into the well in Hisar, Haryana, India.

According to local media, he had been playing with other children when he suddenly slipped and vanished into the hole in the ground on Wednesday evening.

His family raised the alarm when they were unable to rescue him from the bottom of the well.

A crowd watched the rescue operation.

A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), army experts and police officials started the rescue operation at about 6.30pm.

Officials reportedly dropped oxygen tubes, biscuits and juice down the well to help the 18-month-old.

They dug a parallel well 20ft away from the bore well using diggers, and when they got near the child they dug manually to prevent injury.

Hisar’s deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Meena told the Hindustani Times that the toddler, who is the youngest of five siblings, was fine after being rescued.

Officials said the bore well had been dug without any permission from the designated authorities and an enquiry is underway.
