Would you try it? New trend where people remove part of their ear

Okech Kendo
Chai Maibert said he was proud to have carried out the procedure.

Shocking pictures show how a patient had the inside of his ear cut out in a bizarre body modification procedure.

Pictures of the Australian man, named Charles Bentley, have gone viral after the cosmetic work was done.

But experts have voiced concerns about the impact it could have on his hearing.

Mr Bentley travelled from Australia to Sweden to have the procedure carried out.

Chai Maibert, owner of Calm Body Modification in Stockholm, posted pictures of the client's missing earlobes.

He wrote: "Fresh #conchremoval on @charlesvbently who travelled around the world from Australia to have this procedure performed by me."

Experts are unclear what the effect on his hearing will be.

Images of the bizarre trend have been widely shared online.

Audiologist Maryam Ghaderi told CTVNews.ca : “If you have that part missing, I would guess a bit of your hearing would be affected - probably your sense of localizing sound.

"To say how much in terms of a percentage of hearing loss is hard to say.”

But Chai defended it, writing on Facebook : “To get some facts straight note that this procedure doesn’t make you deaf.

“It might impair your ability to hear the direction of sound for the first week or two until your mind has adjusted to your new ears. Hearing from behind will in fact improve.

“Our ears doesn’t “catch” sound as it did eons of years ago when our ears were bigger hence why we have to create a bigger “ear” by cupping our hand around our ear to hear better.'”

It is unclear how many people have had conch removal procedures done, but searches on sites such as Pinterest do reveal people proudly showing off the new trend.
