US Embassy advises citizens to avoid this area in Nairobi CBD

The US Embassy in Kenya on Thursday evening issued a demonstration alert urging her citizens to avoid downtown Nairobi.

This is after word went round that there would be demonstrations today (Friday 8, March); one in support of women’s rights and the other to protest corruption.

The demos were expected to attract large crowds and the Embassy asked US nationals to exercise caution.

“Location: Announced gathering point is Uhuru Park, adjacent to the Central Business District, Nairobi.

“Event: Kenyan organizers have announced two marches to take place on March 8, 2019, beginning at 8:00 a.m. One march is in support of women’s rights, while the other is to protest corruption.

“Organizers claim there will be approximately 100,000 demonstrators attending the anti-corruption event. U.S. government personnel are advised to avoid the downtown area.

Actions to take:

“Avoid the area of the marches.

“Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.

“Monitor local media for updates.”
