Kamara accident death toll rises as numbers of survivors remain mysterious

The death toll in the Kamara accident involving a bus and a trailer along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway has risen to nine.

The 1am accident occurred after the bus christened Greenline which was heading to Nairobi collided head on with the trailer that was heading in the opposite direction.

Kamara Location Chief Joseph Korir who was among the first to respond said that the accident killed seven people among them the driver of the trailer on the spot.

Chief Korir said that the bus appeared to have been overtaking another vehicle at a sharp corner when the accident occurred.

"The accident occurred at a sharp bend corner at 1am. From our observations the bus might have been overtaking since it had joined the lane for oncoming traffic. Seven people died on the spot," said Chief Korir.

He added that the injured were rushed to Eldama Ravine Hospital as residents turned up to remove the bodies stuck in the wreckage.

"We managed to retrieve all the seven bodies from the wrecked vehicles at around 4am after which the police cleared the scene," said Korir.

Eldama Ravine Hospital confirmed having received 74 people who were injured among them five children and two students who were heading home for the half term break.

Mary Serem, a nursing officer at the hospital confirmed that two people succumbed to their injuries at the facility while five others have been referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu has confirmed that the seven bodies were taken to Molo Sub County mortuary.

"We are yet to get the official number of survivors since others were rushed to the hospital by good Samaritans. Investigations have commenced," said Matu.
