Two thugs shot dead in Riruta raid

Two suspected thugs were on Sunday night shot dead in a botched robbery in Riruta, Nairobi, and a gun found on them.

Police said the suspects were robbing locals when police were alerted. Three others escaped on foot.

Patrols have been enhanced during this festive season to curb crime.

Dozens of residents were arrested in swoops at the weekend as part of efforts to address crime.

Nairobi police boss Joseph ole Tito said they have enhanced patrols across the city.

He added that traffic police will enhance operations to ensure road safety.

Meanwhile, police have launched daytime alcoblow tests on the roads in Nairobi to tame drunk driving.

More than 80 motorists were at the weekend arrested after failing alcoblow tests.

Police staged daytime drink-driving tests on the city roads and arrested 80 motorists. They were charged in courts.

Police mounted roadblocks and conducted random checks which netted the 80 motorists on Saturday morning alone.

The trend will be extended to major cities in the week.

Tito urged Kenyans to dial 999, 112 and 911 to report incidents.

The calls from the country are received within a command centre in Nairobi and then dispatched to officers in the field.

Police say they have seen a change in response since the centre started operations.

“Let us interact with authorities to ensure our environment is secure. It is the responsibility of everyone to ensure security,” said Tito.

More than 300 National Youth Service personnel have been recruited to man the call centre which has enhanced operations.
