Sharks raring to swim against Kotoko’s tide

Coach Muluya says he is ready to face West African side.

Kariobangi Sharks will play their biggest match since they were formed when they take on Ghana and African giants Asante Kotoko in a CAF Confederation’s Cup fixture at Kasarani today.

The Ghanian side boast of a rich history both at home and on the continent while Sharks who are making their first appearance at the continental level can only take pride in having won the local cup competition.

In total, Kotoko have won 58 titles both at home and on the continent with two CAF Champions League titles in 1970 and 1983 standing out as their most coveted trophies.

But despite facing such huge opposition Kariobangi Sharks coach William Muluya remains undaunted by the task ahead.

Muluya said he respects their opponents but does not fear them and believes his side has a good record against the major clubs.

“We also have big clubs locally. Tusker, Gor Mahia and Sofapaka can be considered to be in the class of Kotoko and we have done well against them locally so we don’t fear them.

“Furthermore, if you want to be great, you must come up against bigger opposition. My players are quite excited about this fixture and are very motivated. We are determined to get something positive and do well in the match.”

The Kenyan side will be without three key players Eric Juma, Eric Kapaito and Sydney Lokale all of whom are out with injury.

On his part, Asante Kotoko coach Charles Akunnor said they will not underrate the Kenyan side.

“We are going to play a Kenyan club that is very confident and tough,” Akunnor was quoted by Ghanaian media.

“They score almost in every match are a threat but what is important at the moment is how we stop that and frustrate them. Of course, the clash will not be decided in Nairobi because there is another game we will host in Kumasi. We are just here to play one half.”

Akonnor also has called for total concentration from his players ahead of the fixture.
