Okoth Obado reports back to office after a month in remand

After spending more than a month in remand, Migori county Governor Okoth Obado has for the first time reported back to work.

The county boss took over operations starting with a series of meetings with county senior officials.

Obado arrived at his office Monday morning where he was welcomed by his staff and supporters.

With the governor facing charges over the murder of his lover and Rongo University student Sharon Otieno, his office has been dormant since his arrest.

On Friday, Obado thanked the people of Migori for standing by him and promised to “effectively work for the people of Migori as their governor.”

“I urge all our leaders, regardless of their political or ethnic affiliations, to embrace peace and unity so that as a family we steer forward the development agenda of our county. Thank you so much; may God bless you all. #MyCounty_MyPride,” he said after blaming some lawmakers for his woes.

Migori Governor Okoth Obado is out on Sh5 million cash bail. The county chief is also expected to pay two sureties of a similar amount.

High Court Judge Jessie Lesiit, however, ordered Obado to submit his travel documents to court.

Justice Lesiit’s directive clamps Governor Obado on condition that he will not be able to travel outside the country, to discharge his duties as county boss.

Court has also restrained him from going anywhere near the murder scene at the border of Migori and Homa Bay counties.
