DP Ruto leads Kenyans in mourning death of musician Joseph Kamaru

Celebrated Kikuyu musician Joseph Kamaru passed away on Wednesday at MP Shah hospital and several leaders mourned his demise.

The 79-year-old was described by many as an inspirational musician whose talent was unmatched.

Deputy President William Ruto: The Kenyan music industry is poorer following the passing on of legendary musician Joseph Kamaru. The vibrant performer wowed audiences with his lyrics that spoke to morality and life lessons. He generated great vibe, which informed, entertained and celebrated the Kikuyu culture.

"Kamaru was a father figure to many musicians, whom he took under his wing, helped them record and publish their songs. His place in Kenya's folklore is assured. We mourn a great musician. Condolences to his family, friends and the music fraternity. Rest In Peace."

Kamaru’s son Stephen Maina confirmed the news adding that the legendary artist had been taken to the hospital on Monday.

Kamaru had earlier in the year been admitted to the same facility when he was suffering from back pains.

Benga lovers described him as a bold musician who was never shy to express his views.
