Kenyan Judge dead after tragic accident

Chief Justice David Maraga is mourning the death of his close friend Environment and Lands Court Judge Samuel Ndungu Mukunya after a midnight tragic accident.

Judge Mukunya died on Friday morning 14 September after losing control while driving and hit a canter at Embassy area on Nyeri-Nyahururu road.

“I have learnt with great sadness about the demise of Judge Samuel Mukunya of the Environment and Land Court through a tragic road accident this morning. Judge Mukunya, a personal friend of many years, was an outstanding jurist. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends,” said CJ Maraga.


The Judge died while police were taking him to to Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

According to Nyeri Base Commander Castarais Mugo, Judge Mukunya was alone in the vehicle that was severely damaged.

 “Both vehicles were extensively damaged. He died while police were taking him to Nyeri County Referral Hospital. He was alone. We did not identify him immediately. We learned this morning that he was a judge,” said Commander Mugo.
