Remember Chelsea's Michael Essien? – See how his career has hit an embarrassing low

In the year 2005, history was made after London club Chelsea completed the purchase of Ghanaian international Michael Essien from French outfit Olympique Lyon for 24 million euros.

It is almost impossible to forget Essien’s contribution to the Premier League if you have watched football for more than 10 years. He was the star of the show at Chelsea.

According to English football outlet The Sun, Essien has been released by Indonesian club Persib Bandung after the outfit filed their maximum amount of foreign players for the new season.

According to Bandung’s Chief Executive Hasyim Zainuri, Essien was not in the club’s plans for the new season since they wanted to for live up to the Indonesian FA’s regulations – having only four foreign players in a single team.

Essien, who is 35 years old, is now in search of a new team and multiple reports suggest that Bandung’s rivals Bali United are willing to offer him a contract, though that’s not confirmed.

He made 168 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League, finding the back of the net 17 times and assisting 10.

Collectively, he played more than 250 games for the Blues before he moved to Real Madrid on loan and later to Italian giants AC Milan in January 2014. He then moved to Greece to play for Panathinaikos till 2016.

He rejected a move to Australian club Melbourne Victory. He then signed a one-year contract with Bandung, where he has now been released.

More on Essien will follow as the saga develops but for now, he’s still clubless.
