‘Uhuru Park was just option number 5’- ODM Director of Communications

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Director of Communications Philip Etale has responded to the government’s move to close down Uhuru Park.

The Nairobi County Government, on January 24, issued a notice telling all Nairobi residents and the general public residents that the Uhuru Park will be closed to allow for phased improvement.

The notice read, “ Notice is hereby given to the general public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvements works in order to enhance recreational usefulness. Consequently, the facility has been closed down to the public for any gatherings and meetings with effect from 23rd January until further notice. We apologise for any inconveniences caused.”

Uhuru Park was supposed to be the National Super Alliance’s (NASA) for swearing in Raila Odinga as ‘The People’s president on January 30th.

The Nairobi Business Community has also written to City Hall, seeking to use the park to hold a meeting on the same day.

The community Chair Wilfred Kamau said that the county government had already given them the go-ahead to hold a free medical camp targeting street boys who would like to get circumcised on the said date.

Through a post on his Twitter, Etale posted a picture of the gazette notice and said,” Was Uhuru's inauguration held at Uhuru Park? Hehe. Panick mode. Uhuru Park as I said was just number 5 option. Lol”

Till then, the park will remain closed until further notice.
