REVEALED: Babu Owino explains the real reason why he was arrested, denies assault charges

Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino, on Tuesday 23 January denied assault charges and revealed the real reason why he was arrested on January 19, 2018.

The MP while speaking during an interview with Hot 96 FM, said that the main reason why he was arrested was because of his petition in court.

“The main reason why I was arrested is because of my petition in court. One of the prayers of the petitioner was that my election be nullified on the grounds that on the Election Day there was violence. They produced a video as evidence… I was not seen in that video, so they know that their case is too weak. They want to influence the mind of the Judge, to believe that indeed Babu is a violent man.” Said Babu Owino.

Francis Wambugu Mureithi filed a petition against his win in the August 8 election in 2017. The petitioner told the High Court that the Embakasi East MP instigated violence at the polling station which disenfranchised his supporters during the election.

Babu Owino was arrested after a video went viral on social media where men believed to be the legislator and his aides were seen roughing up a parking attendant in Westlands, Nairobi.

However, in the interview, the MP denied the claims and said that he was actually in Mombasa at the time of the incident.

He even denied claims that the car in the video belonged to him.

“You can search that car, they said it is a KBZ… my V8 is a KCE,” said the legislator.

The MP was released on a Sh500, 000 bail and two sureties of Sh1 million each after spending two nights in prison.
