Lecturers clear way for a strike immediatley after October polls

University academic workers top decision-making organ yesterday cleared the way for a strike starting on September 30.

The University Academic Staff Union (Uasu) National Executive Council (NEC) meeting passed a resolution that a 21-day strike notice is issued Monday next week.

This means university academic staff workers will down their tools after elections to press for adjustment of their pay slips to higher brackets as negotiated under the Sh10 billion deal.

Uasu Secretary General Constantine Wasonga said NEC ratified the resolution during a meeting held yesterday.

“The government must honour the 2013-2017 collective bargaining agreement (CBA),” said Dr Wasonga.

Wasonga said university administrations have not adjusted workers salaries to match new rates as negotiated in the CBA.

“We hope the strike will allow adequate time for political transitions and immediate settlement of the deal,” he said.

The Inter Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) has informed the unions of its challenges.

”Public universities will continue to pay the salaries and house allowance to members of staff until the matter is determined,” reads part of the letter dated August 29 and signed by Paul Kanyari, IPUCCF chairperson.
