Uganda allocates 2 billion to regulate access of pornographic materials

Uganda has set up a committee that will detect any pornography material circulating in the country.

"Pornography has unfortunately encompassed the entire nation, so the role of this committee is very wide," said Simon Lokodo, the Minister for Ethics and Integrity.

He also said that people were misusing technology and that is why they had to take this initiative. The committee which comprises of nine people has been given 2 billion Uganda Shillings.

“Government has approved UgShs 2 billion for the pornography control committee for this year. The committee was inaugurated this morning before I came here and it is now operational so we are ready to fight this graft of pornography, “Said Mr Lokodi.

Mr Lokodo said that watching pornography has led to the increase of immorality cases such as homosexuality and rape.

"We want to appreciate the fact that science has brought us this improvement and development of technology, but this has been misused unfortunately, so that instead of using technology for a good purpose, it has been unfortunately diverted to the use of pornography. The telephone, the TV, the radio, now it's no longer used for the purpose for which it was meant – communication. It is now for dirty stories," he said.

“Pornography is corruption in itself. It’s an evil that people have accepted to live with due to apathy. But the fight against it isn’t a futile venture because some people have been arrested, and others arrested. This will continue,” he continued.

The committee has also been given the task of raising awareness about the dangers of watching pornography to the public.
