what we need to do to have a peaceful general elections

  • Kenya's general elections has only less than 7 days to go.
  • IEBC has promised that the elections will be credible and fair to avoid rigging.

With only less than a week to the general elections, care should be taken to ensure that Kenya does not slide back to what happened in 2007/2008 where many lives were lost and many Kenyans were displaced.

Politicians should strive to hold peaceful campaigns without unnecessary physical or verbal attacks on the other aspirants seeking the same elective post.

During their campaigns, they should clearly articulate the issues they seek to address of how they plan to change the lives of the common ‘mwananchi’.

The politicians should further encourage their followers to maintain peace even during and after elections as a way of having a better Kenya.

Politicians being key player when it comes to peace, they should shun use of hate speech. This is because hate speech can result to tearing apart a country that all of us have worked so hard to build.

In ensuring that peace prevails during this time, the Kenyan citizens should desist being irresponsibly used by politicians in the name of fighting for ‘haki yetu’. In most cases it is always the right of the politicians involved.

In the past it has been witnessed where many youths have often been lured by politicians to cause mayhem especially after losing elections to the opponents. This in return has made the law enforcing bodies to consider certain regions in Kenya as political hotspots.

In most cases when the environment becomes hostile, the major people who suffer are always the citizens especially the youths. Rarely will one find a politician in those areas when the environment is hostile.

Many at times, social media has been irresponsibly used. In a case when there is an issue, most tend to argue along tribal lines. This irresponsible usage has resulted to people hating the other tribe when they see their names starting with certain letters.

Kenyans should hence use it responsibly by tolerating one another and as an avenue for promoting peace as a way of making Kenya a safer place for all of us.

The IEBC should strive to ensure that they deliver free, credible, transparent and verifiable election. This will in return make the aspirants to accept the election results without having any doubt attached.

They should further convince the greater public that the constant rigging claims by both the major political divides, NASA and Jubilee, are null and void. This will only be done through delivery of a credible election.

Kenya is greater than all of us. We really need to work extra hard to save it from a possible collapse. This is because even after elections, Kenya will still be there.
