As the election period draws nearer, Kenyans – majority have already made up their minds about who they will vote for, potentially even their successors, if all goes according to plan.

Many say politics is a dirty game, but the truth is – it is a mind game – the dirt is all in the mind. Politicians, may be the most trustworthy people when looking for votes but that can all change after they get into power, depending on where their interests (personal and non-personal) lie.

President Uhuru Kenyatta looks set to endorse Deputy William Ruto for the 2022 presidency if he is re-elected on August 8th. At least that’s the kind of assumption Jubilee Party gives us. The duo look to have a grand plan to be in control for a long period of time, if impressions are anything to go by.

However, we can never rule out the fact that political tides come with fortune and bad luck, with Kenyan politicians being experts at disagreeing, leading to splits between major alliances and possibly shifting the course of the country’s leadership.

Meru Governor Peter Munya spoke widely about his support for President Uhuru Kenyatta, while at the same time reiterating his struggle to agree with DP Ruto. According to Munya, ‘forces’ inside government being led by Deputy President William Ruto are bent on interfering with politics in Meru County, specifically his party, the Party of National Unity, PNU.

Munya, who also spoke about his disagreements with Meru gubernatorial aspirant Kiraitu Murungi, was quick to highlight that PNU was the first party to be contacted to support President Uhuru’s re-election.

Confident of re-election to be Meru Governor, Peter Munya made clear his intention to vie for Presidency in the year 2022. When asked about being rather the ‘underdog, with DP Ruto and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho also looking set to vie for the same seat.

But Munya never seemed bothered by his to-be competitors, sighting democracy as they key reason why there should be more candidates vying for the same position.

This therefore creates the assumption that interference by DP Ruto in Meru politics could be a tip of the iceberg in his grand plan to potential competition in advance, paving the way for a clean sweep come 2022.
