Singer Jaguar charged with causing death

News
Charles Kanyi at the Baricho law courts

Popular singer Charles Kanyi aka Jaguar has been charged following a road accident in which two people died.

He is accused of dangerous driving that killed a boda boda rider, Mugo Mwangi, and his passenger, Joseph Maingi Kaina, on March 21 along the Sagana-Makutano road, within Kirinyaga County.

Mr Kanyi, who was unrepresented, denied committing the two traffic offences and was released on Sh50,000 cash bail.

Baricho Senior Principal Magistrate Evans Keage also ordered that the case be mentioned on May 5 and set the hearing for June 26.

Kanyi arrived at the court compound driving a navy blue Mercedes Benz shortly after 8.15am yesterday, headed straight to the courtroom and sat patiently awaiting the proceedings.

His file was called up at exactly 9am and his case was the first business of the court where other accused persons did not know they were seated with a celebrated musician.

The court heard that Jaguar was driving towards Nairobi from Nyeri when he lost control of the car and knocked down the cyclist and his passenger, killing them on the spot.

Dressed in a blue jersey, grey jeans and black rubber shoes, the musician appeared unruffled when the offences were read out to him. Kanyi then drove off fast from the court precincts avoiding the media.
