Why Education CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i is likely to close three universities in Kenya

In a new university scandal, the Commission for University Education (CUE) has written to Education Cabinet secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i recommending that three private universities be stripped off to offer degrees.

CUE cited the following gaps at the universities that are likely to be closed by Dr. Fred Matiang’i.According to CUE report, some undergraduates students in those universities have been taking six semesters instead of eight semesters to graduate.

Secondly, a majority of students who had credit transfers took two years to graduate instead of four years. This came by because the students were granted more than 49 per cent credit transfers.

Thirdly some students from those universities graduated from non-accredited programs. It has also been discovered that the universities did not have a curriculum development policy.

The commission also cited some students being awarded degrees before meeting the minimum instructional hours.

CUE added that some of the universities have relaxed as far as the admission terms and conditions are concerned.

The commission lamented that some of the universities focus on getting money, on the other hand, compromising the quality of education given to students.
