Wanyama strikes: Not good enough as Spurs crash out of UEFA Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur failed to secure a spot in the round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League after KAA Gent held Spurs to two-all draw at Webley on Thursday night. The Belgian’s outfit progressed on 3-2 aggregate.

The hosts took the lead ten minutes into the game. An assist from Eric Dier saw Danish international Christian Eriksen sliding in a neat fish past the keeper.

20th minute corner kick piled lots of pressure at the Spurs box, whereby Harry Kane headed in his own net, putting the match on level terms.

Dele Alli’s regrettable over-the-top challenge on Brecht Dejaegere in the 39th minute, reduced Tottenham to 10 men as the Englishman marched off the pitch.

Victor Wanyama reclaimed the lead in the 61st minute as he curled in a grand volley into the left top corner. All credits go to Son with the build-up of the goal, whose shot was picked up by Eriksen before connecting to Wanyama. It was Kenyan’s first ever Europa League goal.

Eight minutes to stoppage time, Jeremy Perbet scored the equalizer frustrating the hosts. The remaining minutes of the game Gent defended very well and it paid off as they advanced to next round of the competition.
