Media freedom is fundamental

Our media outlets have profoundly exercised their mandate of scrutinising and promoting efficiency, effectiveness and integrity for both public and private institutions, thereby enhancing governance.

The industry has involved diverse audiences and encouraged them to take part in matters of governance.

It is the same media that are relied upon during electoral periods to provide a clear ideological difference between contestants during campaigns.

The role of the media is, therefore, fundamental in the governance process. When media are over-controlled, then that becomes a well organised strategy by the Government to control the society.

When media are muzzled, the public is gagged. The fight for media freedom in Kenya and Africa is far from over. We must fight for it.
