PIC probes KU and JKUAT foreign campuses

Two public universities have run into trouble for setting up satellite campuses outside the country without approval of Commission of University Education.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Kenyatta University management is on the spot for setting up the campuses in Rwanda and Tanzania.

The two institutions are now the subject of investigations by a parliamentary watchdog committee, seeking to establish why they chose to invest millions of shilling in satellite campuses in the region.

Already the National Assembly's Public Investment Committee has written to the Vice-Chancellor of JKUAT Mabel Imbuga and Kenyatta University management, demanding to know the reason that informed decision to set up the foreign campuses.

The move has been triggered by concerns raised by CUE after it cautioned public universities against setting up campuses outside the country last month.

Chief Executive Officer Prof David Some criticised the universities for the setting up of the campuses without the commission's approval.
