Varsity students to help address teacher shortage in Mumias

University students will teach in public schools in Mumias East in a bid to address a teacher shortage. Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali said each student who teaches in the CDF schools will be given a Sh25,000 bursary to cater for their tuition fees.

He said he started the initiative following acute shortage of teachers in the region which has affected education standards. Kakamega County has a shortage of 3,000 teachers, according to the Teachers Service Commission.

“We asked university students to teach in our new rural schools during their holidays. The initiative will help reduce idleness when they are on holiday,” said Washiali.
