Are critics of Ruto's mega-donations clutching at straws?

There have been lengthy and aggressive speeches lately over Deputy President William Ruto's eye-popping donations with some proclaiming it's the long-sought smoking gun pointing to ill-gotten wealth. Where does the Deputy President get  20 million to give out in cash donations to harambees in just one week? This is the mystery.

I am no defender of Ruto or any of his riches. Nonetheless, other possibilities can legitimately   explain Ruto's mystery largesse. Forget the Eurobond.

Anyone who has had some education on wealth creation would know by now that the key to being wealthy is to have money work for you and not work for the money. That means eventually , if you are smart, you should no longer depend on your salary to hang on to dear life; instead a litany of income sources that represent your investments should garner you the life of your dreams. Heck, thanks to this, some people even take early retirement and never earn a salary again for the rest of their lives, living lavishly off their investments instead. It's called diversification, duh, and no, it's not a crime. It takes no financial wizard to figure this out.

If, assuming Ruto started making his wealth long before he became Deputy President (and this is not at all absurd), and if his financial savvy looks anything like his political astuteness, then we should be looking at a vast business empire in assorted sectors by now.

Think I am pulling your leg? Well, take Raila and Kalonzo Musyoka who no longer hold jobs in the Government and so technically no longer earn salaries as Ruto and Uhuru do. Does this deny them a millionaire lifestyle, their withheld pensions notwithstanding? Nope. In fact, if they want, they can splurge money on harambees in much the same way as Ruto is doing. Why not? The more the merrier, to quote an oft-Raila line.

Newsflash: These rich club of men (for this is what they all are) are clutching onto some secrets  the rest of us seem not to have a clue about. Investment (cast as far and wide as the eye can see ) is  the game in town. Out with slaving for money! In with making money slave for you!

How do you suppose Bill Gates could make  more money than the entire government of Kenya in one year even if he slept all year and we all worked back to back like the slaves we are?

Interestingly, this Bill Gates now has gone into full time philanthropy (think of that as perpetual harambee) while earning (shock, wait for it) no salary. Nobody in his right mind would call that corrupt.

I don't know how far this helps in advancing Mr Ruto's defence but it's the least I could do . For the rest of you, I hope this has helped to dispel some common and persistent myths. Now let's get on with rest of our lives people, shall we?
