Sense of duty and pride: This is what we lack as Kenyans

Events unfolding on the national scene have left many wondering whether Kenyans are patriotic enough. A patriotic people have a sense of attachment and are ready to defend or even die for their country. But as it is, national duty is a scarce quality in most Kenyans. The sense of acquiring quick riches is high; it is a question of how much one can get from the country’s coffers. Where did sense of shame and national pride go?

What will it take to get the nation’s morals and ethos?

News headlines are quite depressing to citizens of goodwill. If the news does not talk about the many millions and billions looted, it is about yet another scam. Our appetite for public resources is increasing by the day.

The saddest bit is that the looters are most polished and respected citizens. Ministers, directors and county officials are on a looting spree.

They have looted so much that the country is reeling from the effect. This is not how to attain development.

I call on all of us to return to reason. A new thinking centering on national duty and patriotism is what we need as a matter of urgency. We cannot continue along this slippery route.

We risk losing our motherland. Yes, Kenyans must demand integrity people entrusted with management of public resources.
