President Uhuru's 54th birthday

News

President Uhuru Kenyatta was born on October 26, 1961 to the founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Minnie Ngina.

Uhuru is the fourth President of the republic of Kenya and is currently serving his first term in government. He was named ‘Uhuru’ meaning freedom in anticipation of Kenya’s independence.

He went to St Mary’s School where he played as a winger in the school’s rugby team and later enrolled at Amherst College in the United States of America where he studied political science and economics.

Upon his graduation he returned to Kenya and started a horticulture company and run some of his family’s businesses.

He met the love of his life Margaret Wanjiru Gakuo and they wedded in the year 1991 and the couple is blessed with three children, Jomo, Jaba and Ngina.

Uhuru first attempt in politics was in 1997 when he vyed for the Gatundu South Constituency but lost to his opponent.

Four years later, he was nominated as a Member of Parliament, and he joined the Cabinet as Minister for Local Government. He would also later be elected First Vice Chairman of KANU.

In 2002, President Moi endorsed Uhuru Kenyatta as KANU's presidential candidate to succeed him but he lost to Mwai Kibaki and thus became the head of opposition.

In the run up to the 2007 general election, he led KANU to join a coalition (called Party of National Unity “PNU”) with President Mwai Kibaki who was running for a second term against Raila Odinga. PNU won the controversial 2007 elections but the dispute over the poll resulted in the 2007-08 Kenyan crisis. Under an agreement between the two parties to end the chaos, Raila was made Prime Minister and Uhuru Kenyatta became the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister For Finance.

ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo charged Uhuru, who was a PNU leader, as an indirect co-perpetrator in the violence that followed the 2007-08 Kenyan crisis, and the charges were confirmed on 23 January 2012. Following the charges, Uhuru resigned as Minister of Finance but maintained his innocence. The charges were dropped on 13 March 2015 for lack of evidence.

Uhuru Kenyatta was elected president of Kenya under The National Alliance (TNA), which was part of the Jubilee Alliance with his running mate William Ruto's United Republican Party (URP).] Uhuru Kenyatta was sworn in as President on 9 April 2013.

Uhuru lists football and golf as his hobbies and loves watching athletics on television.
