The teachers' payrise should now be reflected in classroom

Congratulations!

This goes to the teachers fraternity for that spirited fight, since Moi's era to date, over their long overdue salary increments. I have witnessed the fiery Secretary Generals from Ambrose Adong, and Ken Wamaria, Francis Ng'ang'a and now the most daring Wilson Sossion among others.

I am tempted to know how they evolve to be so fiery but that will be a story for another day. Back to the issue, you have fought well, in courts and out of courts, some have ended up serving in cells(even for hours), most of them risked losing their jobs, but now the have been awarded by the court the increment of betwween 50 and 60%.

I know you are happy now, but maybe someone down in the village may not be that happy. Because by the way you have never been that keen on your work. The increment of course is good because it will motivate you. Now the big question many folks in the village are asking, how are you going to to translate that increment into achievements in class?

There has been alot of outcry, not only now, but also most of the time that teachers engage in side jobs to keep them surviving, and as such they have failed to ensure they dedicate their time in the classroom. This trend has had repercussions on the general performances of the public schools over the years with the private sector overtaking them.

It's a good step to win what is supposed to be yours, but it's another thing to use it properly for the realisation of the objectives of your purpose.

As the courts concluded the battle that has dragged for years, the teachers have won, the government has lost, but the people have lost and benefitted at the same time. Lost in the sense that the increment comes fromt the treasury vote which could otherwise be supposed to carry out a crucial work. They have won because the teachers have had the last laugh.

The big question that is now being put out to KNUT and all stakeholders in the sector is, what are you going to do to ensure that the you enhance delivery by the teachers in classrooms now that the elephant in the room has been handled? Are we going to see a new way of doing things in our public schools?
