Nairobi woman caught on CCTV stealing Sh1.7 million

A woman has denied stealing Sh1.7 million ($12,400) from a man who had just arrived in the country.

Claire Achieng appeared before a Nairobi court for allegedly stealing money from Paul Inda in the Komarock estate with others, but not before the court.

The court heard that Inda had been out of the country and upon arrival, he was picked up by a friend at the airport and took him to the estate. Inda had some parcels that included money he was given by relatives abroad to take to their families. According to the prosecution, he left the house with the luggage and checked into a shop within the estate, which provides money exchange services.

He then checked into a bar with some friends for a drink before changing to another one later on where the three women, including Achieng, joined them before stealing the bag from under the table.

When he discovered his bag was missing, Inda reported the matter to the police who reviewed CCTV footage and identified the suspects. Achieng was tracked and arrested to face the charges.

She was released on a bond of Sh600,000 with a surety of a similar amount. The hearing is set for November 2
