Woman in court for burning child with stove over missing pieces of chicken

A woman who burned her granddaughter on the chest using a stove over a chicken piece eaten by a cat has been released on a Sh10,000 bond after she denied the charge.

Margaret Adongo, 54, is alleged to have assaulted her granddaughter on March 11 at her residential house in Mathare area.

Adongo was staying with the granddaughter who was helping her with the house chores.

On the fateful evening, Margaret arrived home at around 8 pm and found the minor fetching water. She lit the stove in a bid to cook ugali for supper but she found out that pieces of chicken meat in the sufuria were missing. There was little soup left.

The minor met her grandmother who was very angry at her and she revealed that a neighbour’s cat snatched the chunky piece of meat then ran away.

Margaret then grabbed a burning stove and hit the minor with it. Paraffin spilled onto the minor's chest causing her harmful burns.

The accused also sustained burn injuries on her leg. The minor ran outside wailing in distress and the neighbours who helped her put off the fire rushed her to Kenyatta national hospital where she was admitted in serious condition.

Adongo denied the accusation and she was released on a cash bail of Sh10,000 pending a hearing.
