In life, you can be anything you want to be: Brenda Onyango, Founder Mental Is Human Too

Brenda Onyango is a lecturer and mental health advocate. She spoke to Esther Dianah.

Education: Certificate in Front Office Operations from Kenya Utalii College, Degree in International Relations, and Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology both from USIU.

Experience: I have worked in different roles in the hospitality industry, where I currently am, including as a front office operations lecturer. I also run a mental health awareness campaign called ‘Mental Is Human Too’ where I create educational content for public consumption on mental health issues.

Awards/recognition: I was awarded a diploma for contributing in the success of the 17th CAA African Senior Athletics Championship, Nairobi 2010.

First job/salary: My first job was as a casual at Southern Sun Mayfair Hotel in Nairobi earning Sh10,000 per month.

Worst/best job: My worst job was in a hotel which had a very toxic work environment. My best job was at Southern Sun because I was never broke.

First/current neighbourhood: I first shared a bedsitter with my friend in South C. Currently, I stay in Ruaka.

Worst mistake: One time, I accidentally posted the wrong amount on a guest account, showing the guest had paid an 11 figure amount. I learnt a lesson to never rush at the front office.

One thing you can’t give away: Material is my laptop, and non-material is my numerous passions.

Unforgettable person: My primary school headteacher. He made all of us students feel that we were destined for greatness.

Best advice ever: You can be anything you want to be.
