More bucks must translate to goals

By Nairobian reporter

The battle was the grit of England versus the sexy samba of Brazil.

The audience was a waitress who kept asking whether that was “rugby sevens” and two waiters sulking over guys who hepad their bills jana.

That was the scene at my local this Sunday night when one of the biggest pre-world cup friendly was on.

When I asked one guys shooting pool (a die-hard Arsenali Damu) why he wasn’t showing any interest in the game, his reply was a loud, “Ai there’s nothing these jamaas are fighting for”.

Further investigation like a commission of inquiry revealed he was saying there was no cash at stake.

Indeed, as I watched the game it was obvious that the players were easy on each other, more relaxed on the ball and patient.

Qualities we hardly see during their club games. The tenacity, commitment and urgency were lacking. No wonder the empty room.

Our dear Nairobi fans were not going to waste their sweet abusive taunts towards each other, on such a game.

Clearly money is a huge motivating factor in life and the game today.

In days gone by, the players had love for the game and would kick the pigskin around with the commitment of a guy on 200,000 pounds a month, yet some even had two jobs while they played in the league!

When a player dons the shirt of Real Madrid, Barca, PSG and Man City today, he doesn’t just put on the colour of the team but also the “colour” in his bank account.

The wages of players in some clubs are astronomical and this ends up driving players to be one thousand times more committed to playing for club than country.

Hence when certain Harambee Stars squad members find their tickets are not compensated for, they simply don’t turn up for the games. No Mariga I’m not talking about you.

I believe in retrospect of that, clubs should demand these players deliver huge numbers of goals or get fired at the end of the season.

Simply give the modern player “performance contracts”. Let him carry the huge responsibilities equal to the huge cash he earns.

That’s why I’ve no problem with MPs demanding huge salaries.

All I want is, we make them get down to cleaning our county streets and toilets with the huge commitment that cash deserves. We don’t mind paying you big cash mpig we just don’t believe you’ll deliver big pork to us!

In football the only ones who seem to be on performance contracts are the coaches.

Once their teams fail to win cups or finish in the relegation zone, they are immediately relegated from their jobs too.

That’s the way it should work for all, kutoka teaboy mpaka CEO; more cash should mean more work not more stomach!!!
